Bare與Bear, 兩字同音也都能當動詞, 兩字當動詞時字意差別在那裡呢?
Bare通常意味著透露、使赤裸而Bear通常意味著承受、攜帶:
You don't need to bare your soul to me.
你不必把內心深處的想法透露給我。
Men usually bare their chests at the beach.
男性在海攤時通常都是露胸的。
It's difficult for parents to bear the pain of losing their children.
失去孩子的痛苦對父母來說是很難承受的。
In America, it's a constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
保有與攜帶武器在美國是符合憲法的權利。
Compliment與Complement發音相同, 詞性相同, 字意上卻不同:
Compliment一般意味著讚美, 而Complement一般意味著補助, 使顯出特色。
He is a gentleman who likes to compliment ladies.
他是個喜歡讚美女士的紳士。
Your dress complements you nicely!
你的服裝使你更有特色!
Flower與Flour發音相同, 詞性相同, 當名詞時, Flower是可數名詞, Flour一般是不可數名詞:
Can you bring me some flowers?
你能帶些花給我嗎?(Flowers是可數的)
Can you bring me some flour?
你能帶些麵粉給我嗎?(除非指多種類的麵粉, Flour是不可數的)
Peace與Piece, 當名詞時, Peace為不可數名詞, Piece為可數名詞:
Having my car checked by the dealer before a road trip gives me peace of mind.
在上公路長程駕駛之前, 給經銷商驗一下車讓我心安。(Peace是不可數的)
If my car breaks again, I'm going to give the repair shop a piece of my mind.
如果車子又再出問題, 我將會讓修車廠知道我的不滿。(A piece是可數的)
Pray與Prey當動詞, Pray是祈禱或祈求, Prey是捕食、折磨或掠奪:
I pray for your safety.
我祈求你能安然無恙。
Christians pray to God.
基督徒都向上帝祈禱。
Holding a grudge preys on your health.
懷恨在心有損你的健康。
Polar bears prey upon seals.
北極熊會補食海豹。
Born與Borne兩者同音不同意, 但卻能同時為動詞"Bear"的過去分詞, 即使同當為Bear的過去分詞, 它們字意還是不同的:
Born做為Bear的過去分詞, 只能意味著出生而且限定於被動語態, 並且無動詞Bear其它含有的字意:
The child was born.
孩子出生了。(被動語態)
The child was born in Taiwan.
孩子出生於台灣。(被動語態)
Borne做為Bear的過去分詞, 不只能意味著生孩子(限定於主動語態), 而且意味著所有其它主、被動語態Bear的字意, 像是承受、結果實等等:
My mom has borne both my sister and I in the same city.
我媽在同一個城市生了我姐和我兩個人。(主動語態)
He has borne enough of your insults already!
他已承受了你夠多的辱駡了吧!
Our 3-year-long plan has finally borne fruit!
我們這長達3年的計劃終於有結果了!

這些同音字是不是也有別的字可以代替，例如:Bear可用suffer來取代

"He can not bear the humiliation anymore" /他已無法再忍受羞辱了. 這句其實不適合用suffer代替
"He suffered multiple injuries."/ 他遭受多重創傷. "He bore multiple injuries."/他承受多重創傷.
"Bear"在這裡(忍受/承受)有意味著撐得住, 而"Suffer"(遭受/ 遭到)則意味著受苦或遇害而無意味著撐得住. 兩個還是有差別的.
"Endure"或是"Withstand"會比"Suffer"更適合代替"Bear".
He can not bear the humiliation anymore = He can not endure the humiliation anymore.
This elevator can not bear the weight exceeding 500KG = This elevator can not withstand the weight exceeding 500 KG.
